MOVE the Valley (Mobilize, Organize, Vote, Empower) is a non-partisan multilingual, multi-ethnic, and intergenerational coalition of grassroots organizations dedicated to advancing civic participation in California’s Central Valley. MOVE’s member organizations work together to expand access to democracy, strengthen community leadership and amplify the electoral voices of historically marginalized communities through coordinated outreach, education, and get-out-the-vote campaigns in nine counties in the San Joaquin Valley and Sacramento areas.

Position Summary

The Director of Programs is a full-time position that plays a critical role in overseeing the various programmatic activities of MOVE the Valley. This role involves developing and managing multiple programs, as well as training and providing technical assistance to the coalition's partner organizations' staff and volunteers to effectively implement these programs. In addition to managing these activities, the Director of Programs will also provide support to the Executive Director, develop strategic communications for the programs, and perform administrative tasks.

The key duties include coordinating and facilitating meetings with the coalition’s partner organizations, as well as taking detailed notes during these sessions to ensure effective implementation, monitoring, and reporting on program development. The Director of Programs will report directly to the Executive Director. This role requires a strong commitment to program development, evaluation, and communication, to enhance the overall impact of MOVE the Valley within the community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage the coalition’s collective impact programming, primarily focused on civic engagement. Through inclusive decision-making, facilitate and coordinate collaborative civic and voter engagement projects, campaigns and services by working with staff and coalition partner organizations to prioritize, develop, execute and analyze collaborative civic engagement projects, regional voter data, and regional landscape development.

  • Develop and manage programs operational budgets and administrative tasks; including developing grants and contracts with the coalition partner organizations and contractors. Make key operational decisions with the coalition’s partner organizations to achieve strategic organizational goals in a timely manner.

  • Develop and lead trainings for the coalition’s partner organizations' staff and volunteers and provide technical assistance to the coalition's partner organizations throughout program implementation. Foster a culture of solidarity and organizational excellence that is transparent, respectful, and encourages open communication.

  • Create and set program goals, ensuring they align with the overall mission and objectives of the organization.Coalition Meetings: Conduct regular meetings with coalition’s partner organizations to advise of program opportunities, program budget updates, and program reporting requirements.

  • Support the Executive Director in fundraising efforts to secure new funding to increase the budget over the next three years needed to support program and coalition operations. Actively develop and monitor program progress and reports for current and prospective funders.

  • Ensure programs align with the organization's strategic communication goals, and occasionally conduct communications assignments, such as social media and website posts.

  • Manages the coalition’s community events and programming that requires in-person interactions in public settings.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Policy Advocacy:

In partnership with strategic community partners, participate in local, state and national policy campaigns on behalf of MOVE the Valley as needed; focusing on critical issues and developing policy analysis and positions for local, regional, and state policies related to electoral reform, voter suppression and other civic engagement-related issues.

Strategic Local and Regional Partnerships:

Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, partners, and leaders MOVE the Valley’s nine counties region. Attend and represent MOVE the Valley in other coalitions and meetings as needed.

Staff Management:

Supervise and oversee the work of programs staff and other staff. In partnership with the Executive Director and other supervisors, lead annual evaluations and review the performance of program staff.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field is required. May substitute 4 years of experience in lieu of degree requirement.

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience with building, maintaining, and/or growing community coalitions, community organizing, policy advocacy, as well as organizational management and fundraising experience.

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience building and managing successful civic engagement campaigns that have effectively increased the civic participation of historically underserved and marginalized communities.

  • A minimum of 2 years of direct experience managing civic engagement or voter programs.

  • A minimum of 2 years of direct experience utilizing voter data and technology tools to improve effectiveness of civic engagement campaigns.

  • Some experience with grant writing and grant management is preferred; experience in raising and managing a budget of $500,000+ annually preferred.

  • Experience supervising staff and contractors preferred.

  • Experience working in coalition with historically excluded communities (i.e., communities of color, LGBTQ communities, or immigrant communities, etc.); demonstrate a commitment to racial and economic justice.

  • Those with lived experience as a member of a historically excluded community are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Excellent time management skills.

  • Strong attention to detail and effective problem-solving abilities.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong organizational abilities with the capacity to multitask effectively.

  • Proficient in computer skills, including the Microsoft Office Suite and Google platforms.

  • A strong candidate for this position should have a combination of knowledge, experience and interpersonal skills to successfully work with non-profit organizations on non-partisan, year-round, civic engagement campaigns and programs by being able to effectively cultivate collaboration within the coalition.

  • Additionally, they should be able to develop coordinated program plans and, while evaluating best practices, managing staff and contractors and overseeing the provision of resources and technical assistance for partner organizations.

  • Knowledge of San Joaquin Valley and Sacramento Metro Region not-for-profit and social justice organizations and the San Joaquin Valley and Sacramento political landscape preferred.

Organizational Relationship

The Director of Programs is responsible for cultivating relationships directly with each coalition partner organization individually and within the coalition as a whole and will supervise and work collaboratively with staff, contractors, vendors and other partners on a weekly basis to maintain program efficiency. The Director of Programs will report to the Executive Director.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to travel regionally on a car or Amtrak 12-15 times a year.

  • Must be able to travel domestically on an airplane 3-5 times a year.

Work Environment

  • The position is a full-time exempt position.

  • The position will occasionally work evenings after 5 PM and on weekends (Saturday and Sunday).

  • The position requires regional and statewide travel up to 15% of the time.

  • This position is fully remote but will have access to work spaces in Fresno, CA.

Salary and Benefits

  • 1 FTE (40 hrs/week) Salary: $70,000- $80,000
